In 2006 Smith Magazine launched a contest for readers to compose the story of his or her life - or a reflection on one part of it - in exactly six words. The result ranged from the humorous to the poignant to the tragic. The contest was such a success that an online community formed followed by one specifically for teens. Check out the latest submissions, and then, if you're feeling creative, add you your own.

In this TED Talk, Amy Cuddy discusses the importance of body language in shaping not only how you are known but who you are.

This informative and entertaining TEDTalk features British rapper Akala, who demonstrates and explores the connections between Shakespeare and Hip-Hop, and the wider cultural debate around language and it's power. Well worth the watch!

Edgar Allan Poe
As we are wrapping up our focused study of Imagery and Syntax (and just in time for Halloween), we have analyzed a selection fro Poe's "Black Cat." While we do have time to analyze the full text of this story , here is an interesting mashup featuring its protagonist being questioned at trial by another famous Poe character, Detective C. Auguste Dupin (from "the Murders of the Rue Morgue," 1841). For a fast-faced and humorous look at the life of Poe, check out Nerdy And Quirky!'s "Cool History: Who was Edgar Allan Poe...Really?"
Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Oscar Hijuelos wrote a tale of Cuban brothers Nestor and Cesar Camillo, who come to New York City in 1949 with dreams of becoming famous Mambo musicians. Here is a clip of the movie adaptation (Mambo Kings, 1992, starring Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas) that gives you a sampling of the musical style described in our Imagery Lesson #2. Also featured in this scene is Tito Puente, the greatest mambo percussionist of the era.

- Khan Academy Great site not only for test prep but also for improving your writing skills. We will use the PSAT Writing practice exercises this year. There's also an app!
- Grammar Girl's Quick & Dirty Tips Often humorous and student-friendly, this blog covers all kinds of topic related to writing. There is even an episode "What is Plagiarism?".
- Basic Sentence Combining If you would to review basic sentence structures and try a few practice exercises, check out this document (possible answers included).
- Sir Ben Darby's song about The Elements of Style Okay, so this link may not be helpful, but I confess that I enjoy this guy's rhymes. He is way cooler than the students in his video, so if you're bored, maybe just listen to it with your eyes closed?
